Who Shot Dave McGovern?

By Paul Smith - Clinic Coordinator, Sierra Race Walkers

Dave McGovern had threatened participants in the Sacramento "World Class Race Walking Clinic" with the "chicken" so when the shot rang out during the final lecture we all knew who was the intended victim. But thank goodness it was just a tire exploding and McGoven dodged another bullet and will live to give another well delivered clinic.

Twenty-one (21) participated in the two-day (all day) and one night pasta party held in Loomis (hosted by the Stoyanowski Family) and Rocklin at Sierra College. The group also found a "Fresh Choice" eatery and an "In N Out" hamburg haven in Roseville where they could get to know one another between relay races and lactate threshold training.

The video taping and stop action moves of each race walker, whether novice or national class, was highly entertaining and instructional. It is not everyday the entire cast gets to star in the show. Dave treats everyone with respect and dignity even if he doesn't get the same in return.

Dave is fun, he is organized, and he is knowledgeable. He definitely has something to say and says it. Although it was a typical Sacramento weekend (meaning warm) it was not terribly hot which was nice. And the spacious family room at the home of Karen and Steve Stoyanowski was comfortable. The pool side seminars certainly provided a relaxed atmosphere for the beginners, the in-betweeners, and the veterans.

Although mostly Sacramento area walkers were in attendance there was one gentlemen from Arizona, a Klamath Falls, Oregon, walker, two Bay Area striders, and a Mother and daughter team from Napa. Ages ranged from early teens to mid-60's. There was something for everyone. Many of the participants were talking about next year. Maybe looking for another chance to do the "chicken."
